Cherry Hill Hardwoods, Inc.
est. 1987
Where we've been
Clarence Hoffman founded Cherry Hill Hardwoods, Inc. in 1987, alongside his two sons, Rick and Jerry. For twenty-five years prior to that Clarence had worked in the family sawmill business with his father and brothers. Lumber has always been an important part of the Hoffman family heritage.
Clarence’s sons were raised around the lumber business. Rick graduated in 1981 from the NHLA residency program in Memphis, TN, and has continued to develop his knowledge and skills in all aspects of hardwood lumber processing. Rick currently serves as sales director.
At its inception, Cherry Hill Hardwoods mainly serviced the green lumber markets in a grading and re-sale capacity. In 1988, the business undertook its first major expansion by diversifying into kiln-dried lumber. Two new conventional steam-heated kilns, each with a drying capacity of 68,000 board feet were placed into service. In 1991, the business discerned a growing need in the American hardwoods export market. In response, a 500,000 bdft pre-dryer was added, to enhance our products’ uniformity of quality and texture, and to meet the more demanding requirements of a global marketplace. In 1997, the business added two more 68,000 bdft kilns to bring our total drying capacity to 750,000 bdft This would be our last major expansion before the new millennium.
Where we're going
In the late 2000’s, Clarence’s grandchildren (Rick’s children), Wes Hoffman and Shena Pinto, began to play a crucial role in the business’ daily operations. Wes now oversees our green lumber purchasing program, as well as the kiln-staging and drying operations of the business. Shena is our chief accounting and HR executive, overseeing payroll, insurance, and other various financial aspects of the business. Jason Pinto, Shena’s husband, is our current yard manager, and oversees the daily yard functions and operations (green and kiln-dried lumber processing, surfacing).
The last decade (2010-present) has also been a season of great expansion. In 2015, a new processing line (grading station, stacker, and pull-chain) was added. In 2016-17, three new steam kilns, with a total drying capacity of 150,000 bdft were added. In 2020, a new warehouse, with a total floor space of 30,000 square feet, was constructed. And in 2021, a second 500,000 bdft capacity pre-dryer was added, giving us a total drying capacity of 1.2 million board feet plus.
Cherry Hill runs three semi-trucks daily, for export and domestic deliveries, and currently employs twenty-seven full-time workers. We are committed to the community, to personal development, to excellence in production and manufacturing, and to cultivating long-lasting business relationships and friendships.
